About the 1066 Jazz Club

There has been jazz in 1066 country since the 1950s, always strongly supported by enthusiastic fans from both the local area and beyond.  The present 1066 Jazz Club was formed in 1996 and takes pride in continuing the tradition of providing ‘New Orleans’ style jazz on the Sussex coast.

We have had several venues over the years, originally in Hastings and St Leonards, and now Bexhill.  We are based at the Egerton Park Pavilion (home of the Egerton Park Indoor Bowls Club) which offers a large dance floor, a licensed bar and – of great benefit these days – free on-site parking.

1066 Jazz Club meets once a month on Friday night and presents a different live jazz band every time, playing in the New Orleans idiom. The music inspires dancing, from a lively jive to a gentle smooch and many styles can be seen here including Ballroom, Lindy Hop, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Charleston Stroll – anything goes!

Our ‘Brolly Parade’ takes place during the first number of the band’s second set and provides a colourful spectacle said by visiting bands to be one of the best in the country.

Bexhill has much to offer visitors.  The town is famous for being the home of motor racing and the iconic De La Warr Pavilion. Egerton Park is full of interest as is the nearby museum and there are plenty of restaurants, pubs, cafes and shops to suit all tastes.

Just a short ride along the coast, Hastings is also worth a visit. The Old Town is famous for its shore-based fishing fleet, net huts and Fishermen’s Museum. Again there are plenty of opportunities for refreshment and shopping.

Various special events are staged during the year.  In Bexhill, they include the Carnival in July, the Motofest in August and the Festival of the Sea in September.  In Hastings there is ‘Jack-in-the-Green’ in May, a ‘Seafood and Wine Festival’ in September and a spectacular ‘Bonfire Night’ as part of Hastings Week in October. So why not come down for a fantastic weekend starting, of course, with a great night out at the 1066 Jazz Club.
